I have mandriva 2008 and I don't have gdk-x11 package and I can't find it for 
2009 either.

This might be the problem. remove any directories that were added at manual 
instalation.

This is my PKG_CONFIG_PATH
[tomaz at pc-tomaz-n ~]$ set | grep CONFIG
PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/qt4/lib/pkgconfig
